Gdansk (Danzig) is a city on the Baltic coast of Poland, and the county's principal seaport. During the Second World War the city was extensively damaged by heavy Allied and Soviet air raids. People who survived and could not escape had to face the Soviet Army, which captured what was left of the city at the end of March 1945

Extensive excellent restoration has largely returned the city to its former glory. Gdansk was the birthplace of the Solidarity movement, created in 1980, which played a significant role in the downfall of communist rule in Poland.
