A micrograph is a highly magnified image taken through a microscope or similar device. For high-magnification work it is essential that the camera is attached to a stable and firm support system. Low or medium magnification work can however be undertaken using standard camera supports provided good lighting is available and the photographer is familiar with best practice techniques.

Work of this type can be undertaken using DSLRs or even more modest digital cameras. However, shutter speeds must be kept high enough to maintain image sharpness. If images are intended for web use, the subject can sometimes be photographed by holding a camera against the eyepiece of the microscope. Images intended for reproduction at larger sizes must of course be captured in more controlled and exacting circumstances.
