Thomas Hanahoe FRPS retired at the end of 2005 from an academic career at a British University. He worked initially as a pharmacologist, then as Director of Studies for Biosciences before becoming Dean of Health Sciences and ultimately university Pro-Vice-Chancellor. Thomas currently has a part-time role as chairman of an NHS Trust, but now also has the time to pursue his passion for wildlife photography.

He qualified as a Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society (LRPS) in November 2006 with a panel consisting of ten landscape and wildlife images. In September 2007 he submitted a panel to the RPS Nature Board and was awarded the distinction of Associate of the Royal Photographic Society (ARPS). In November 2009  Thomas was elected to the Fellowship of the Society (FRPS). His panel consisted of twenty pictures of British birds displaying behaviours typical of their species, photographed within natural habitats. This panel may be viewed in the Distinctions section of this website and on the photographer's own website.

All the wildlife images on the photographer's own website were taken in the UK, some in places such as Norfolk, the Highlands of Scotland, the Outer Hebrides and Shetland, but many in places closer to his home in Bedfordshire. He often uses the facilities of organizations such as the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds or the wildlife trusts. His plans for 2011 include a visits the Isle of Mull and North Uist in the Outer Hebrides, the north Norfolk coast, and the Isle of Skomer in Pembrokeshire, South Wales. In addition, he may undertake trips overseas.
